Northern Lights Cruise Packing List

We recently had the incredible opportunity to sail aboard Fred. Olsen’s Borealis on a magical cruise in search of the Northern Lights. If you’re planning a similar trip, our Northern Lights cruise packing list will help you stay warm, dry, and ready for every Arctic moment.

Your Northern Lights Cruise Packing List

If you’re planning your own Northern Lights cruise, it’s important to know what to pack as the weather can be unpredictable, and you’ll want to be warm, dry, and ready for every moment, from deck-side stargazing to scenic port walks. Here’s our ultimate packing list so you know what to pack for a Northern Lights cruise.

Before You Travel – Don’t Forget These Essentials

Before you get carried away with your thermal layers, make sure you’ve packed these vital bits:

  • Passport – Always double-check it’s valid for your cruise dates.
  • Travel insurance documents – Ensure you’re covered, especially for winter weather disruptions.
  • Currency – Some cash in Norwegian Krone may come in handy.
  • Medications – Bring enough for your whole trip, plus spares.
  • Cruise documents – Cruise ticket, luggage labels and proof of any pre purchased excursions and etc.

What to Wear: Stay Warm & Dry

Weather in Norway during the winter months can be cold, snowy, and windy. Layering is key, and waterproof gear is a must. Here’s what we recommend:

  • Waterproof and windproof jacket – A high-quality outer layer will protect you from the elements.
  • Waterproof and windproof trousers – Especially useful during excursions or walks in the snow.
  • Woollen or thermal underwear – A good base layer makes all the difference.
  • Warm socks – Thick, thermal socks to keep your feet toasty.
  • Warm, waterproof boots – Essential for exploring icy ports and snowy paths. We took some snow boots
  • Shoes with a non-slip sole – For added grip on wet or slippery surfaces.

Winter Accessories You’ll Be Glad You Packed

  • Warm hat – Heat escapes through your head, so don’t skimp on this.
  • Scarf – Protect your neck and face from the cold wind.
  • Gloves or mittens – Waterproof if possible, or layered with liners for extra warmth. Don’t forget to look out for touch screen compatible ones so you can still use your phone.
  • Ice grips – These fit over your shoes to help prevent slipping on icy ground.
  • Walking sticks (if needed) – Helpful for balance during icy or uneven terrain.
  • Sunglasses – Snow glare can be intense, especially on bright days.

Onboard Comforts

While the outdoors can be chilly, life onboard is cosy and comfortable. Pack a few items to make life on the ship easy:

  • Lightweight, slip-on shoes for indoor use – Something comfy to wear around the ship.
  • Swimwear – Yes, really! There may be hot tubs or a spa to enjoy.

Gadgets & Extras

A cruise to see the Northern Lights is a once-in-a-lifetime experience – so you’ll want to capture it all!

  • Camera and tripod – A must for photographing the aurora (the latest camera phones are pretty good too).
  • Spare batteries or a power bank – Cold weather drains batteries quickly. Keep everything topped up, especially if you’re out for long periods.
  • Binoculars – Great for spotting wildlife or taking in scenic views.
  • Backpack – Handy for carrying gear during excursions or scenic walks.
  • Refillable water bottle/flask – Stay hydrated or take a warm flask of coffee with you.

One Final Tip

Layering is the golden rule. Start with a thermal base layer, add a warm mid-layer (like a fleece or wool jumper), and finish with a waterproof outer layer. That way, you can adjust throughout the day as temperatures and activity levels change. If on excursions it can get quite warm on the bus to and from your destination.

We were blown away by our experience aboard Fred. Olsen’s Borealis – not just by the chance to spot the Northern Lights, but also by the incredible atmosphere onboard and the majestic scenery ashore. With the right packing list, you’ll be set to enjoy every chilly, magical moment.
