Visiting Olden, Norway
During our 14 Night P&O Arcadia cruise, we visited the Port of Olden in Norway.
About Olden
Olden is a small village in the municipality of Stryn and is located at the mouth of the Oldeelva river. In 2013, the recorded population was 498. Its an extremely popular cruise location for cruises with all the major cruise lines calling there.
There are a number of things to do in this port, such as take a rib ride, ride the Loen Skylift, go Kyaking, cycling, take the land train or one of the most popular: see the million-years-old Briksdal Glacier.
Our day in Olden
Sailing in to Olden is well worth waking up early for. Get up on deck to take in those views – the sail out is just as spectacular though! We planned two activities during our day in Olden, you can read about them below.
Loen Skylift
The Loen Sky lift, which opened back in 2017 is found at the foot of Mount Hoven in the small village of Loen, just a 10-minute ride from the quayside.
The cable car climbs 1,011 metres to the top of Mount Hoven above the Nordfjord, where you can witness the amazing scenery first hand. The cable car climb takes between 5 and 7 minutes, with a maximum speed of 7 metres per second.
We purchased tickets for for this from the shore excursions desk, they were £64 per person. More infomation about the Loen Skylift can be found on the Loen Skylift website here.
Land Train
Once you disembark the ship, you will see vendors selling various excursions, one of these is a 70 minute land train journey around Olden by ‘Olden Sightseeing’. At 200 NOK per person, we highly recommend this. The commentary was really good, telling you all the facts and history about the area, as well as some tales.
Please watch our Episode 4 vlog above to see what we got up to and to admire the views for yourself.
