HRH Princess Royal visits Queen Anne

Cunard recently had the honour of welcoming Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal aboard Queen Anne during the ship’s visit to Liverpool on 27 May.

Liverpool holds a special place in Cunard’s 185-year history. It was from this very city that Cunard launched its first ever Transatlantic crossing back in May 1840, and it remained the company’s headquarters for 128 years. Just last year, Liverpool was given the unique title of Godparent to Queen Anne – a world first – during a memorable naming ceremony held at the city’s iconic waterfront.

During her visit, Her Royal Highness joined local dignitaries, crew members, and guests in the elegant Queens Room to reflect on the long-standing connection between Cunard and its spiritual home. She also spent time with members of Cunard’s Women Officers Network – a remarkable group representing women across both maritime and hospitality sectors.

Katie McAlister, President of Cunard, shared:

“While this was intended to be a celebration of Cunard’s 185th anniversary, it has instead become a moment of solidarity with the city. Our thoughts are with all those affected and with the entire Liverpool community at this time.

“Liverpool is not just where Cunard was founded – it’s where our story began. The docks, the river, and the people of this great city, with its rich maritime heritage and strong identity, have helped shape who we are.

“The bond between Cunard and Liverpool spans generations. It’s built on shared values – resilience, pride, and deep respect for tradition – and it continues to mean the world to us. We’re always proud to return.”

The visit also coincided with Sea of Glamour – a special exhibition curated by Mary McCartney. Featuring 184 photographs from Cunard’s rich past and present, the exhibition celebrates the glamour and legacy of transatlantic travel, dating all the way back to Cunard’s first voyage from Liverpool in 1840.
